I recently completed what I considered a ‘training marathon’. I had several full day trainings and a few workshops back to back for several days in a row. This occurred for over a month. While this is the essence of what I do, I had to take care that I was prepared for each event.
Three tips I would offer anyone to prepare you for a successful training would be defined by the phrase “Relax! Relate! Release!”.
First RELAX! I often feel like I am running on fumes but I know that sleep is very important for health. Before each training it is my goal to get at least six hours of sleep. The American Psychological Association (APA) also states that sleep is key to our health and well being. According to the APA our individual sleep needs vary but we should strive for at least six hours. I feel prepared when I have enough sleep and my energy is restored. To learn more about sleep, read this article from the APA on the importance of sleep.
Second RELATE! This is all about becoming pumped up and energized. I try to bring as much energy to the group as I want to receive from them. Ever try to talk to a room full of folks sucking on lemons???…………….YIKES! I try to relate to the group’s energy by listening to music that gets me amped. My music is mixed genres that hype me up so I can get into a good space mentally. I feel very responsible for the energy that I bring into the space of others. Being mindful of this helps me maintain a good attitude and an energized spirit.
Finally RELEASE! I do not know about you but I am always a ball of nerves no matter when I have to speak in public. I heard someone say, “if you are NOT nervous then SOMETHING is wrong!”, I am not sure who said that but I like it. While I am no Beyonce, I agree with her thought about nervousness “I think it’s healthy for a person to be nervous. It means you care – that you work hard and want to give a great performance. You just have to channel that nervous energy into the show.” Before I address a group, I tend to say a prayer or quote and focus on my breathing. Times when I do not do this, I find that I am breathing really hard almost like I’ve been running around. I also tend to become unfocused and disorganized. When I notice it, Whether I can get away or if I take a break in addressing the group I say a quick prayer or quote. It does the trick every time.
I hope these tips were helpful!
